Following a successful documentation of historic buildings, sites and monuments in most of Uganda’s cities over the years, with Mbarara city being the most recent, The Cross-Cultural Foundation of Uganda has embarked on research to document and publicize historical buildings, sites and monuments in Hoima city and Masindi municipality which are already experiencing unprecedented rush for expansion and “modernization”. The expansion of these urban areas has posed a risk to the important remnants of our historical landmarks, cultural identity and indigenous character of both Hoima City and Masindi municipality
The documentation therefore intends to draw the attention of the public and tourism promoters to the wealth of Hoima and Masindi’s built and natural heritage and the need to preserve it for future generations, and package this heritage as a potential source of revenue especially through cultural tourism for social-economic transformation.
The targeted historical buildings, sites and monuments include those with a cultural, religious, educational, historical, commercial and natural significance. CCFU has closely collaborated with the Department of Museums and Monuments, the Uganda Tourism Board, city authorities and owners of historical buildings who mainly include religious institutions, cultural institutions and the business community.

Other cities that have been profiled include Kampala, Jinja, Entebbe, Fort Portal, Mbale and Soroti. Maps, a mobile app named Uganda’s Built Heritage, and coffee table publications have been produced. The foundation remains committed to the promotion and preservation of our rich heritage and calls upon all stakeholders to commit to protecting our shared heritage before it slips away.
