Ten students graduated from Kyambogo University with a Bachelor of Cultural Heritage Studies (4) and Bachelor of Archaeology and Heritage Management (6) during the 20th Graduation ceremony held at Kyambogo University on the 11th of December 2024.

In 2017, The Cross-Cultural Foundation of Uganda in collaboration with the Ministry of
Gender Labour and Social Development, the Uganda National Commission for UNESCO
initiated a project to promote ICH Education in Institutions of Higher Learning in Uganda.
This project led to the development of an undergraduate course on “Cultural Heritage
Studies” which is now being taught at 4 universities of Kyambogo, Kabale, Uganda Martyrs University-Nkozi and Islamic University in Uganda.

Speaking on the graduation day, the dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at Kyambogo University and a prominent contributor to the development of this course, Associate Professor. Elizabeth Kyazike thanked CCFU for their collaboration with the University to develop and implement the programme. She also congratulated the graduates upon achieving this milestone and also for choosing the discipline.

According to Fahad Ssemakula, one of the graduates who now serves as volunteer at CCFU, the programme presented them with an opportunity to learn about the different aspects of their heritage.

“CCFU has given us a platform to enhance our understanding of culture from a smaller understanding dimension of Uganda Museum, Kasubi tombs and various rock art sites to get a clear and broad picture of what culture is which we had not fully maximised inside the lecture rooms,” Ssemakula noted.

CCFU has supported the graduates to secure employment and volunteer placements at different museums including the Koogere Foundation, the Kigulu Museum, the Uganda Railway Museum, and the Great Lakes Museum. Financial support was also extended to the graduates to facilitate their internship.
