The Madi Community Museums has profiled the cultural resources of the Madi sub-region through a publication titled “Unveiling the cultural heritage of the Madi sub-region”
The Madi sub-region is endowed with unique cultural and historical resources which are largely undocumented or publicised. The resources include both tangible and intangible heritage such as religious landmarks, ceremonies, music, historical buildings, caves, mountains and rivers among others.
In 2022, the Madi Community Museum with support from the Cross-Cultural Foundation of Uganda, conducted research to document important cultural resources in the Madi sub-region. As a result, the museum has been enriched with relevant information to serve as a centre for research and heritage education. Additionally, the museum will provide spaces and opportunities for the Madi, especially young people to access and learn about the important cultural treasures of the Madi community, hence contributing to the safeguarding of cultural heritage of the region.
Launching the publication, the Chief Administrative Officer and the LCV chairperson, Moyo district underscored the need to engage young people to embrace their cultural heritage. They also unscored the need for all Madi people from Moyo, Adjumani and Obongi districts to work together to safeguard cultural heritage. They promised to work and support the cultural structures and institutions which are the custodians of the Madi cultural heritage.
The Madi Community Museum was founded in 2014 to collect, document, and preserve the diverse cultural treasures of Madi and promote cultural tourism. The museum is registered as a community-based organisation (CBO) that is anchored on four major objectives: a) to collect cultural and heritage resources to display and exhibit for tourism purposes and preservation; b) to research and document the cultural and heritage resources of the region for heritage education purposes; c) to promote cultural and natural tourism with a focus on cultural and natural resources and ecosystem conservation; and d) to research and compile economic, human, social, security and political history resources involving people and events in the region both past and present that are of significance for educational purposes and entertainment.
The ultimate aim of the museum is to be the leading centre and source of information in the Madi sub-region regarding cultural resources, and how they can be safeguarded.
