The 6th CCFU Heritage Awards: seven heritage promoters recognised

CCFU Heritage Awardees

The 6th Heritage Awarding ceremony organised by CCFU

On October 3rd, 2024, the Cross-Cultural Foundation of Uganda (CCFU) hosted the 6th Heritage Awards at the historic Mayor’s Parlour in Kampala. The ceremony was attended by over 120 prominent individuals from various sectors, including government ministries and departments (responsible for Gender, Labour and Social Development, Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, and Education), foreign missions (British Council), cultural institutions, private sector, academia, media, and civil society.

The event was held to recognise and celebrate Ugandans who have made an outstanding contribution to heritage preservation and promotion in Uganda. This year’s awardees were presented with prestigious awards in various categories, including tangible and intangible heritage.

The Kampala Capital City Authority Lord Mayor, His Worship Erias Lukwago, was the chief guest and he emphasised the importance of preserving cultural heritage. He highlighted the historic significance of the Mayor’s Parlour (the venue of the awarding ceremony), saying, “This building is an important symbol in Uganda’s history and culture. It is a marker of our heritage preservation efforts in Kampala City. Such efforts should be rolled out in other parts of Uganda.” His Words emphasised the importance of deliberate efforts to safeguard cultural heritage, rather than leaving it to chance.

Keynote Address: “The Current Context for Heritage Safeguarding in Uganda”

Dr. Jimmy Spire Ssentongo from Makerere University delivered a thought-provoking keynote address, highlighting the importance of preserving cultural heritage in the face of modernity. Dr. Ssentongo emphasised that Uganda’s cultural heritage has been threatened by the pursuit of Western values, leading to a complex relationship with imported and local products. He underscored the need to appreciate and support promoters of Uganda’s own culture.

The CCFU Heritage Awards were initiated in 2013 to recognize individuals and organisations for their excellent contributions to preserving and promoting Uganda’s cultural heritage. The awards aim to provide a missing incentive – social recognition, publicity, and a small cash contribution – to underscore the urgency of heritage protection in the country.

Over the years, these awards have played a key role in recognising and celebrating the richness and diversity of our heritage, inspiring others to get involved in safeguarding their own cultural heritage, and fostering a sense of pride and ownership among Ugandans.
