Our Mission
The Cross-Cultural Foundation of Uganda exists to promote an appreciation of culture as vital for human development that responds to our diverse identities. Read our Strategic Plan for 2021-2025 for further details about our programme interventions.
We define culture as a constantly changing set of values, identities, practices, traditions and aspirations that govern the way we live and relate as individuals, communities and nations. Culture is central to our well–being and to defining the ideal society we seek.
Our Assumptions
- Cultural identity is an essential element of human life – and remains resilient despite overwhelming external influences and exposure.
- Culture is relevant and has the potential to contribute (knowledge, skills and resources) to sustained development.
- People have an intrinsic desire to preserve, adapt and promote culture in spite of the current state of neglect of cultural resources.
- The lack of confidence and conviction in the relevance of culture can be reversed but requires evidence-based knowledge and experiences.
- Change may be externally triggered, but necessary cultural transformation must be internally inspired and driven.
- Culture rests with the people.
Our Objectives
- Safeguarding and promoting cultural heritage resources through heritage education in secondary schools, conserving endangered species such as the chimpanzee, mapping and supporting community museums, historical buildings and sites, safeguarding cultural heritage against climate change effects.
- Promoting cultural rights through advocacy for the rights of indigenous minority groups, rights of women, working with civil society, including the media, and other groups.
- Managing cultural diversity through fostering the existence of cultural and supporting cultural institutions to adapt to their changing operating context.
