Young people call for support from cultural leaders to reconnect them with cultural resources that promote the rights of women and girls

The training with young people in cultural associations from universities in Kabalore district

We were in Kabalore this week training leaders of cultural associations at Mountains of the Moon University to use positive cultural resources in addressing violence against women and girls, promote access to Sexual reproductive Health Rights and justice. The one day engagement was held at Mountains of the Moon University in Fort Portal.

While interacting with the young people, they noted that there are many cultural resources amidst them that can be positively used to promote the rights of women and girls, but are disconnected from them. They appealed to cultural leaders to create platforms where young people can be taught about these resources and  enable them to use them.

Mountains of the Moon University pledged to support engagements of the cultural associations while they work towards realising the mitigation of violence against women and girls while employing cultural resources.

This engagement is the first of many, as CCFU works towards scaling its work in regards to promoting the rights of women in universities. Such engagements will spread to other universities such as Kyambogo, Uganda Martyrs and Gulu University.

CCFU’s efforts to promote the rights of women and girls

Working in partnership with UN Women and the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, the Cross-Cultural Foundation of Uganda (CCFU) embarked on a project being implemented in the six cultural communities of Alur, Buganda, Busoga, Karamoja, Tooro and Acholi. Building on earlier work undertaken by CCFU in Lango and Acholi (where some complementary investigations were also conducted), its aim is to harness the cultural resources of these communities to contribute towards: (i) ending violence against women and girls in Uganda (VAWG); (ii) promoting sexual reproductive health rights (SRHR) in Uganda; and (iii) enhancing women’s and girls’ access to justice

CCFU has documented cultural resources that can be used to mitigate violence against women and girls that you can access here.
